Geographic location: Province of Santa Cruz. 

How to get here: by land from El Calafate (210 km), where the closest airport is located.  

Climate: warm and humid, with no dry season defined. In summer it rains less and it is more windy. The average annual temperature is 7,5°C. In winter there are very low temperatures that can fall to as little as -15ºC. 

Ideal time of the year: October through March. 

Recommended length of stay: 3 to 7 days. 

Recommended clothing: warm clothes, in layers. It is advisable to be ready for temperature changes and strong winds.  

What to do: El Chaltén is known as the Capital of Trekking. There are several tours that can be completed in one day.  

The most popular ones are Glaciar and laguna Piedras Blancas, Laguna Torre, Glaciar Huemul, Laguna de los Tres, Laguna Toro and Loma del Pliegue Tumbado. If you are planning to stay several days, longer circuits may be taken and you can camp in authorized areas.

Tips: at the Centro de Visitantes del Parque Nacional Los Glaciares [Los Glaciares National Park Visitor Center] located at the entrance of El Chaltén and at the Oficina Municipal de Turismo [Tourism Municipal Department] you can get maps showing the local roads and check their condition.
